The Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia is actively continuing the reconstruction of the Khulo-Zarzma section on the Batumi (Angisa) - Akhaltsikhi secondary road. The project is divided into 3 sections and a total of 47 kilometers of road will be rehabilitated and reconstructed.

The work on the first section is being carried out with the support of the Kuwait Foundation, while the second and third sections are financed from the state budget. The total cost of the works is 95,689,302 GEL.

The Khulo-Zarzma road project envisages the arrangement of 2-lane asphalt-concrete pavement. At the moment, more than 70% of the earth excavation, retaining walls and drainage structures have been completed on the first and second sections, which cover a total of 42 km. In parallel mode, the construction of 4 new bridge crossings is actively underway. The works of stabilization of the road base and arrangement of asphalt-concrete cover have been started. At this stage, the pavement is already laid on a section of up to 2 km, and by the end of the year, asphalt-concrete pavement is planned to be laid on a section of up to 15 km.

Due to the difficult terrain and geological conditions, the activities of appropriate study and development of project solutions are being intensively carried out on the challenges created in the form of landslide processes developed in 11 areas.

The renovated Khulo-Zarzma road will connect the regions of Samtskhe-Javakheti and Adjara in the shortest way. Its rehabilitation-reconstruction will contribute to the improvement of the socio-economic condition of the population of upper Adjara and Samtskhe-Javakheti, as well as the development of tourism. Traffic safety will be significantly improved. In addition, with the updated route, the travel time from Batumi to Akhaltsikhe will be reduced by 1.5 hours.

The rehabilitation section of the road starts from Khulo township, passes through Goderdzi pass and reaches Zarzma village of Adigeni.
