The Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia continues the rehabilitation works of the Zhinvali-Barisakho-Shatili road.

Zhinvali-Barisakho-Shatili road is the only road that connects the central region with Shatili and Northern (Pirikita) Khevsureti. Due to this fact the improvement of this road is especially important for both local and national population.

This section of the road has not been rehabilitated for 40 years. The road was very narrow and full of soil, with frequent landslides, and traffic was not safe.

In recent years, with the funding of the state budget and with the support of the World Bank, the rehabilitation of the 84 km section of the Zhinvali-Barisakho-Shatili road has already been completed, and the works on the 16 km section will be completed in the summer.

17 new bridges are being built along with the road rehabilitation. Most of the old bridges were built in the 60s, so they can no longer provide safe movement. Construction of the new bridge crossings will be completed by the end of 2021.

As a result of the rehabilitation works of the Zhinvali-Barisakho-Shatili road, the parameters of the road have been significantly improved, artificial reinforced concrete structures have been arranged - retaining walls, water pipes, drainage canals. In addition, road safety measures were taken along the entire section of the highway - new road signs, horizontal road markings and metal barriers were installed. The construction of new bridge crossings has improved the safety of curved sections of the road and the attractiveness of bridges.

Rehabilitation of Zhinvali-Barisakho-Shatili road will make traffic much safer on the access road to Shatili. The improved road will also facilitate the full use of the region's tourism potential.
