First Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia and Chairman of Roads Department Irakli Karseladze opened a rehabilitated tunnel at km 59 of Zugdidi-Jvari-Mestia-Lasdili road.

From now on, traffic of vehicles moving in Mestia direction will be carried out passing through the upgraded tunnel. A length of the tunnel is 537 m, while diameter is 18.5 m.

Existing tunnel was damaged and did not comply with traffic requirements. Complete rehabilitation of the tunnel was carried out according to the project to ensure uninterrupted and comfortable movement in the tunnel. Namely, arrangement of permanent hardness of the tunnel and restoration of damaged areas; arrangement of drainage systems and hydro isolation. Also, rehabilitation of tunnel portals, tunnel carriageway, sidewalks and tunnel facing works have been carried out.

Tunnel rehabilitation project was financed by the state budget and its cost amounted to GEL 6 370 000. Works started in March 2017 and completed in August this year. A total of 150 people were employed in the works.
