Roads Department continues disaster clean-up operations

Roads Department resumed disaster clean-up operations in the West Georgia this morning.  From September 24, necessary heavy machinery is mobilized in all landslide areas within 24 hours due to possible natural disasters. Members of the Emergency Headquarters, created at the request of the Prime Minister, are still in disaster zone and survey the situation on place.

Chairman of Roads Department of Georgia, Vazha Panchulidze is also in disaster zone and personally supervising all cleaning and recovery works ongoing in the region.

Last night land slide occurred on Batumi-Akhaltsikhe road due to heavy rain, thus resulted in closing of movement. Representatives of RD were able to open one-way traffic immediately in 2 hours. Members of Emergency Headquarters, Chairman of Roads Department of Georgia, Vazha Panchulidze and Deputy Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia, Zurab Kopadze, also representatives of regional office of RD inspected Akhaltsikhe road at night and surveyed situation. At this stage cleaning works are underway at land slide affected territory and traffic will be resumed.

Yesterday, members of Emergency Headquarters, created at the request of the Prime Minister, also visited Ozurgeti city, where they surveyed damaged infrastructure, inspected road condition and dwelling houses damaged as a result of disaster. They met with disaster-affected population.

At this stage, road construction and bank protection works are ongoing at km4 (village Shemokmedi) of Ozurgeti-Shemokmedi-Bzhuzhhesi-Gomismta road, which damaged due to inundation on September 24.

Visit of the Prime Minister is expected today in Adjara and Guria.
