The Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia is actively continuing the construction of the 23 km long road and tunnels between Kvesheti and Kobi. The drilling works of the main, 9 km long tunnel, which is produced by a specially made tunnel boring machine (TBM) for the Kusheti-Kobi project, is already underway at a depth of 5 km. An evacuation tunnel has been cut at 3 kilometers and 820 meters.

Within the framework of the Kusheti-Kobi project, a total of 23 km long 2-lane asphalt-concrete road, 5 bridges, 5 tunnels are being built and 1 bridge is being rehabilitated. Among the tunnels, the 9 km long and 15 m diameter tunnel stands out, which will be the largest in Georgia and one of the unique in the world.

About 10 villagers of Khadi valley will maintain their connection with the outside world in winter in a new way. The road will no longer be blocked and the residents of the village will have access to all the necessary services.

Transit traffic will no longer be restricted in winter, cargo turnover will increase, a 5-km access road to Gudauri and a tourist center will be built, which will make movement comfortable and safe and increase the tourism potential of the region.

On the new road, all the necessary standards of traffic safety will be observed, and the travel time will be reduced. If currently it takes up to 1 hour to travel from Chusheti to Kobi (in winter - even more) and traffic is often prohibited due to the danger of avalanches, after the completion of the project, it will take only 15 minutes to travel the section. The travel time in Tbilisi-Gudauri direction will be 1 hour and 30 minutes instead of 2 hours. Moving in the direction of Tbilisi-Stephantsminda will take 1 hour and 45 minutes instead of 2 hours and 30 minutes.

The Kusheti-Kobi road project is being implemented with the support of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and its total cost is 1.2 billion GEL. The project is planned to be completed by 2024.
