The Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia continues the construction of a high-speed highway in the Kakheti region. At this stage, active construction works are underway on the 35 km Tbilisi-Sagarejo and 16.6 km Bakurtsikhe-Tsnori sections.

The Tbilisi-Sagarejo section is part of the main highway connecting Tbilisi with Kakheti and the transit corridor connecting it with the northwestern region of Azerbaijan. The existing road passes through densely populated villages and towns (Vaziani, Sartichala, Ninotsminda and Sagarejo). The new road will relieve traffic in populated areas, thereby dramatically improving safety standards and reducing travel time.

Construction of the 35 km Tbilisi-Sagarejo road is underway in 3 sections - Vaziani bypass road, Vaziani-Sagarejo section and Sagarejo bypass road. The Vaziani bypass is planned to be completed in 2023, and the remaining two sections in 2024. The project is financed by 527 169 937 GEL from the state budget.

Construction works have also started on Bakurtsikhe-Tsnori bypass road, which bypasses densely populated Tsnori and 6 nearby villages. A new bypass road is being built on the side of the Alazni Valley and will connect the Tbilisi-Bakurtsikhe-Lagodekhi-Azerbaijan border international road with the existing domestic road. The works are being carried out with the financial support of 87.8 million GEL from the Asian Development Bank.

Tendering procedures are also underway for the construction of the 17 km section of Sagarejo-Badiauri.

In total, 2 billion GEL will be used for the development of the Kakheti road network.

After completion of all current and planned sections, it will be possible to get from Tbilisi to Telavi in 1 hour and 20 minutes.
