"The construction of the Kakheti road is actively underway. Today we visited the ongoing works on all three sections. We have already planned the opening of the first section. Work will be actively continued on the remaining two sections. The most important and critical is the 35 km long section of the Kakheti highway that goes from Tbilisi to Sagarejo. As a result of the completion of this section, the travel time will be significantly reduced and the journey will become more comfortable. The project envisages the construction of a 4-lane road, which will allow us to move at 110 km per hour, of course, in compliance with international road safety norms", said the Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, Irakli Karseladze, while inspecting the construction process of the Kakheti road.

The Roads department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia started the construction of the Kakheti road in 2021. On this stage, the construction of the 35 km Tbilisi-Sagarejo main road is underway, where a 4-lane cement-concrete high-speed road equipped with an external lighting system is being built.

The construction of the 35 km Tbilisi-Sagarejo road is divided into 3 sections (lots) - Vaziani bypass road, Vaziani-Sagarejo section, Sagarejo bypass road. Construction works are underway on all three sections. The Vaziani bypass is planned to be completed in 2023, and the remaining two sections in 2024. The construction is financed from the state budget and its total cost is 527,169,937 GEL.

The Tbilisi-Sagarejo section is part of the main road connecting Tbilisi with Kakheti and also the transit corridor connecting it with the North-West region of Azerbaijan. The existing road passes through densely populated villages and towns such as Vaziani, Sartichala, Ninotsminda and Sagarejo. The new road will completely relieve traffic in populated areas, which will improve traffic safety and reduce travel time.

According to Irakli Karseladze, the tender procedures are also underway in the Sagarejo-Badiauri section of the Kakheti road, while the works in the direction of Bakurtsikhe-Tsnori have already started.

"In general, taking into account the 10-year development strategy initiated by the Prime Minister and "Vision 2030", approximately 2 billion GEL is planned to be invested in the development of the Kakheti road and internal state and international roads. Accordingly, after the completion of all the current and planned sections, it will be possible to get from Tbilisi to Telavi in 1 hour and 20 minutes, which will naturally give the already great potential of Kakheti an even stronger boost for further development," said Irakli Karseladze.
