The Zhinvali-Barisakho-Shatili highway is the only road that connects the central region with Shatili and vice versa with Khevsureti, so the improvement of this road is especially important for both the local population and the country as a whole and tourists.
In recent years, with the funding of the state budget and the support of the World Bank, the rehabilitation of the 85 km section of the Zhinvali-Barisakho-Shatili road has already been completed, and the works on the 18 km section will be completed this year.
This section of the road has not been rehabilitated for 40 years. The road was very narrow and dirt, with frequent landslides, and the movement of vehicles was not safe.
17 new bridges are being built along with the road rehabilitation. Most of the old bridges were built in the 60s, so they can no longer provide safe movement. The construction of the new bridge crossings will be completed in stages by the end of 2021. The construction of 9 bridges has already been completed by this time.
As a result of rehabilitation works of Zhinvali-Barisakho-Shatili road, asphalt concrete and cement concrete were laid on the first 60 km of the road, and the remaining 46 km were covered with local soil, the road parameters were significantly improved. Reinforced concrete artificial structures were installed - retaining walls, water pipes, drainage channels. Also, measures to improve road safety were taken along the entire section of the highway. New road signs, horizontal road markings and boundaries were arranged. The construction of new bridge crossings has improved the safety of curved sections of the road and the attractiveness of bridges.
Consequently, travel on the access road to Shatili will become much safer and more comfortable, which will contribute to the development of the region and the full use of the tourist potential, thus dramatically improving the living standards of the residents.
