Pre-construction activities of Kvesheti-Kobi road and 9 km tunnel are actively progressing. TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) specially made for cutting the tunnel is already in Georgia. At this stage, unloading has been completed and transportation to the construction site will start as soon as the closed Gudauri-Kobi section is opened.

Gudauri-Kobi section has been closed since January 11 due to avalanche hazard and traffic has been restricted. Similar restrictions are common during the winter. Exactly Kvesheti-Kobi road and the unique tunnel will solve this problem and it will be possible to move continuously on the mentioned road at any time of the year.

Moreover, 9 km long and 15 m. wide tunnel is a project of unprecedented scale in Georgia and in the region.

Tunnel construction will be carried out for the first time in Georgia by use of Tunnel Boring Machine –TBM.  TBM is one of the most high-tech tunneling machines. The construction of the tunnel with this method significantly reduces the impact on the environment and is highly safe. TBM, in parallel with the tunnel boring, provides concrete lining of the tunnel, which further increases the safety standard.

Intensive construction works of 23 km long Kvesheti-Kobi road and 9 km tunnel will start this year.

The existing Kvesheti-Kobi road passes through difficult geographical route. Due to the heavy snowfall and avalanche hazard in winter, movement on the mentioned road is unsafe. Construction of a new road and tunnel will solve a long-standing problem and enable smooth movement of vehicles on this route at any time of the year, which, in addition to safety and time savings, is also very important for the country from the financial standpoint.
