Construction of Rikoti Pass road is actively in progress. Due to the prevention of New COVID-19 spread, works are in progress in compliance with the special recommendations developed by the Ministry of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Labor, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia, under the direction of the Inter-Agency Coordination Council on COVID-19, headed by Prime Minister of Georgia.

Currently, construction works are actively ongoing on 12,2 km long Khevi-Ubisa and 13 km long Ubisa-Shorapani and 11.7 km long Chumateleti Khevi sections of Rikoti pass road.

In total, the construction works, for 32 bridges and 25 tunnels, are in progress at the same time. As for the forth, Shorapani-Argveta section, the contract has already been awarded and the works will start soon.

In total, Rikoti pass project considers construction of about 51.6 km road, which includes 96 bridges and 53 tunnels. Completion of Rikoti pass road is planned by 2022.

Modernization of the Rikoti pass section is essential in terms of the development of the road network and bringing it in line with modern standards. New road considers all modern road safety standards, but its parameters will ensure speed doubling in full compliance with safety norms, thus eventually will reduce by half the travel time by the time of finalization of East-West corridor. If today, covering the distance between Red Bridge to Sarpi takes 8 hours, in future it will be covered in 4-4,5 hours.
