19 Ongoing Projects Within the Scope of Mountainous Roads Development

64 million GEL is allocated for mountainous roads this year and 19 projects are in progress for 9 months. Rehabilitation/construction works are carried out on a total of 137.8 km of road, including the construction works on the Sachkhere-Oni highway, where the 51km road is divided into 7 lots and the total project cost is 108.5 million GEL. After its operation, 6 hour travel time from Tbilisi to Oni will reduce by 1,5hours. – Irakli Karseladze, First Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, Chairman of Roads Department noted at the sitting of  Regional Policy and Self - Government Committee.

According to Karseladze, the construction works for Bagdati-Abastumani is in progress and will be completed in stages in 2019-2020. The total length is 61,5km. the project is divided into 9 lots with the estimated cost of GEL 323,8 million. The construction of the 3 km tunnel at Zekari pass is envisaged, which provides the road operation throughout the year. As Irakli Karseladze noted, these works will reduce the 4 hours travel time from Kutaisi Airport to Abastumani by 1.5 hours.

Besides, the construction/reconstruction project for Sno-Juta-Roshka-Shatili-Omalo-Akhmeta road section is noteworthy.  Nowadays, works are being carried out on 9 sections with a total length of 65 km. The project will be completed in stages in 2020-2022. From the next year, the traffic from Tbilisi to Shatili will become much more safe and comfortable” - noted Irakli Karseladze at the committee hearing.
