Contract was signed with the winning company in the international bidding for construction of Ubisa-Shorapani section of Rikoti Pass road. A new road will be constructed by a Chinese company - China Road and Bridge Corporation. Construction contract of 13-km new road was signed by First Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, Chairman of Roads Department Irakli Karseladze and Chairman of China Road and Bridge Corporation Lu Shan.
China Road and Bridge Corporation was founded in 1979. During the last 10 years, the company constructed more than 200 roads, with a total length of more than 10 000 km; 40 large-scale bridges of complex structure with total length of more than 100 km; 6 large tunnels of complex structure with total length of more than 30 km.
Cement concrete 4-lane and 13-km road, 27 bridges and 18 tunnels will be constructed on Ubisa-Shorapani section. Construction works are financed by the European Investment Bank.
A priority for Georgia is to increase competitiveness in terms of transit by improvement of transport corridors. In addition, in order to strengthen the country’s economy, trade promotion regarding the neighboring countries and development of tourist infrastructure is very important. In the light of the foregoing, modernization of four-lane highways of E-60 and E-70 transit corridors (East-West highway) has a special function, therefore, construction-reconstruction-modernization of various segments are actively ongoing. Ubisa-Shorapani section represents one of the constituent segments of East-West E-60 transit corridor.
Construction of up to 51.6 km road is planned on Rikoti Pass, including 96 bridges and 53 tunnels. Chumateleti-Argveta section is constituent part and one of the most difficult sections of E 60 highway.
The contract cost of Ubisa-Shorapani project is 901 973 206.57 GEL. A period of project implementation is considered from December 2018 until December 2021.
