Natural disaster damaged several road sections in Adjara and Mestia

Traffic movement was closed for a short time at several road sections of West Georgia due to surplus rainfall and accompanying stiff wind.

In particular, several sections of bank protection structure and road bed at km118-km119 of Senaki-Poti-Sarpi road, in the territory of Sarpi, were damaged due to heavy gale on October 19-20. Waves damaged concrete parapets, washed off road bed and road supporting riprap; water brought inert materials to the carriageway.

Roads Department mobilized relevant road machinery on-site and cleaning works were implemented promptly without traffic restriction. For today, concurrently with restored traffic movement, study and design process for liquidation activities of consequences of natural disaster is underway. After completion of this process relevant reinstatement works will be undertaken.  Also, on October 20, as a result of heavy rain mass of soil-rock collapsed at km43 of Batumi-Akhaltsikhe road, near the village Zvare, due to which traffic movement was restricted for a short time. As a result of effective and prompt cleaning works, respective road section was opened in half an hour.

Due to bad weather, traffic was restricted at Goderdzi Pass, wherein for assurance of passengers safety traffic movement was closed because of heavy snow and storm. Cleaning works were ongoing all day long by relevant units of Roads Department. At the same time, road agencies enabled to move vehicles and passengers from dangerous section to safe place.

As a result of effective cleaning works and weather improvement, for today traffic is opened at respective pass.

Large mass of rock collapsed at carriageway of this road and traffic movement was restricted for some hours. Road agencies promptly cleaned carriageway by utilization of mobilized machinery.
