Samtskhe-Javakheti road rehabilitation works have been completed. The project, which costs 209 million U.S. dollars, is the largest and the most successful project of Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure and of the Millennium Fund.

The project includes restoration of the transport network and road infrastructure of Kvemo Kartli and Samtskhe - Javakheti regions. The rehabilitated road will create better conditions for trade, tourism and business development. Rehabilitated road will help to connect Samtskhe - Javakheti and Kvemo Kartli to other regions of Georgia and will help political and economic integration of the local society as well.

The construction works are financed by the Government of the United States, and the Millennium Corporation.  The rehabilitation works began in the spring of 2008. Construction of the road with length 224 km has been implemented, including the road till Turkish and Armenian borders. Construction of 15 bridges and drainage systems (along the rehabilitated road) has been implemented as well. After completion of the project the duration of travelling will be reduced from eight hours to 2.5 hours from Akhalkalaki to Tbilisi.

The companies-winners of international tender (German - Georgian, Papen burg / Black Sea group, the companies of Azerbaijan "Azerinshaatservice"   and "Akord Inshaat Saney") have implemented the rehabilitation works by considering international standards.  The quality of the used materials has been controlled during the rehabilitation process.

The duration of exploitation of the rehabilitated road is 20 years. The Department of the Road of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia will take care about the road after the completing the rehabilitation works.
