Implementation of unprecedented project –construction of Rikoti Pass road has been launched in the region. This project is one of the most difficult and largest with respect to engineering in Europe. Similar large-scale project has not yet been realized in Transcaucasia.

Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, Mrs. Maya Tskitishvili and First Deputy Minister, Chairman of Roads Department Mr. Irakli Karseladze inspected ongoing works.

“Particular number of local population have already been employed at project and we have specific plans for hiring additional workforce. As for the modernization of Rikoti pass road section, it is essential in terms of development  of road network and bringing it in line with modern standards “ – declared Mrs. Maya Tskitishvili.

By this time works have already been commenced on 12.2 km long Khevi-Ubisa section and 13 km long Ubisa-Shorapani section, namely, site clearing, removal of topsoil, arrangement of construction camps and plants are underway.

The winner will be revealed shortly and civil works will start on Chumateleti-Khevi section, but for Shorapani-Argveta section tender will be announced this year.

Construction of Khevi-Ubisa section (II section) is financed by Asian Development Bank (ADB) and project value is more than GEL 732 MM, but Ubisa-Shorapani section is financed by European Investment Bank (EIB) and project value is GEL 902 MM.

Rikoti bypass road construction project considers construction of about 51.6 km long section, which includes around 96 bridges and 53 tunnels. Finalization of Rikoti pass road is planned by 2022.

New road considers all necessary road safety standards, but its parameters will ensure speed doubling in full compliance with safety norms, thus eventually reduce by half the travel time by the time of finalization of East-West corridor.

If today, covering the distance between Red Bridge to Sarpi takes 8 hours, in future it will be covered in 4-4,5 hours.

Finalization of construction of East-West Highway and proper operation is essential for creation of attractive transport corridor. In addition, under the conditions of increasing tourist flows, top-priority is given to creating safe and comfortable road infrastructure.

“Contract was signed at the end of the last year. We have brought out over 70 employees and 100 units of construction machinery are mobilized.  Part of the machinery is under the process of transportation. We have full understanding of the project significance for Georgia and it is a great honor for us to implement those works. We hope, that the project will be successful and it will promote to development of the country “- stated Mr. Vincent Mam, General Manager of the project.
