As part of the construction of a 23 km Kvesheti-Kobi road and a 9 km tunnel, drilling and construction of a 9 km tunnel in Kobi is underway.

The tunnel drilling works are carried out with a TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) machine specially made for the Kvesheti-Kobi project.

At this stage, the works in the main tunnel are already 180 meters long, and the construction of the evacuation tunnel is at a depth of 2 km. At the same time, the construction of the access road to the tunnel is underway.

In total, the project envisages construction of 23 km of 2-lane asphalt-concrete road, 5 bridges, 5 tunnels and rehabilitation of 1 bridge. Among them is a 9 km long and 15 m diameter tunnel, which will be the largest in Georgia and one of the most unique in the world.

According to the project, the villages of Kvesheti, Arakhveti, Zakatkari, Beniani-Begoni, Sviana-Rostiani, Mugure, Tskere and Kobi will be included in the new road area.

The current road length is 34 km, the new 23 km road will reduce the distance by 11 km and the travel time by 1 hour. At the same time, transit shipments will no longer be carried out through Gudauri resort, which, on the one hand, will ease the traffic of the resort and, on the other hand, will make the transit traffic more safe.

The total cost of the Kvesheti-Kobi new road project is 1.2 billion GEL. The construction is carried out by the Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia with the financial support of the Asian Development Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (ADB, EBRD). The project is scheduled for completion in 2024.

Due to the difficult climatic conditions in the Khadi Valley, the locals are cut off from the outside world for about 100 days a year. Due to heavy snow or avalanches, the road is often closed and makes the movement of distribution, ambulance and transit vehicles impossible. Consequently, locals do not have access to medical or other social services for months.The new Kvesheti-Kobi road will make all types of traffic safe at any time of the year. In addition to solving the problems of the local population, the new road will also bring economic benefits - the country's transit potential will increase, new tourist destinations will be created, which will create new opportunities for the local population.

Within the framework of the project, a 5 km access road to Gudauri will be built, Gudauri will be relieved of non-resort traffic, which will increase the tourist potential of both the resort and the region.
