Giorgi Tsibadze, Deputy Chairman of the Roads Department together with the specialists and representatives of the local self-government inspected the progress of cleaning and restoration of damaged sections of Zhinvali-Barisakho-Shatili secondary road.

At this stage, Zhinvali-Barisakho-Shatili road has been cleared up to km 90, where a large amount of land and rock mass has collapsed due to weak soils. The restoration of this section will be done in accordance with the recommendations given by the specialists and the road is expected to be opened in 2 weeks.

Rehabilitation of 54 km long  Zhinvali-Barisakho-Shatili road was carried out in 5 lots. 9 bridges are also under construction on the same section.

The rehabilitation project was developed on the basis of the relevant geological and hydrological surveys in 2018 and mainly aimed at improving road and safety parameters.

This is the only road, which connects central regions with Shatili and Pirikita Khevsureti, therefore improvement of this road has utmost importance. The mentioned section has not been rehabilitated for 40 years, and the road was strongly damaged, thus impeded traffic.

The project aims to make access road to Shatili much safer, since the existing road is a soil road, landslides are frequent and it is practically impossible for vehicles to bypass.

Upon completion of the road rehabilitation, the road parameters in the direction of Shatili will be improved, the carriageway will be widened, guardrails will be arranged and movement will be much safer and more comfortable. Rehabilitation of the access road to Shatili will contribute to the development of the region and the full use of the tourism potential.

Zhinvali-Barisakho-Shatili road is closed during the winter due to heavy snow, while the road is cleared of snow and debris every year in the spring.
