Roads Department has awarded a contract to international company Sinohydro on arrangement of reconstruction works at 42km Khulo-Zarzma section of Batumi (Angisa)-Akhaltsikhe secondary road. The company was the winner of international tender announced for conducting the mentioned project.

Reconstruction of 42km Khulo-Zarzma road, which is divided into two sections is funded by Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development. Total cost of the two sections amounts to GEL 95 689 302. Project base line is 2 years.

In parallel, reconstruction works, funded from the State Budget are actively progressing at the remaining 5km section of Khulo-Zarzma road.

Batumi (Angisa)-Akhaltsikhe project is divided into three sections. In total, 47km road and 7 bridges will be rehabilitated-reconstructed. 2-lane asphalt-concrete pavement will be arranged.

Rehabilitation-reconstruction of Khulo-Zarzma road has been retendered after a contract was terminated with a contractor company Todini, due to default on obligations. As a result of the enforcement of bank guarantees to secure the contract, the state received about 10 million GEL.

Upgraded Khulo-Zarzma road will connect Samtskhe-Javakheti and Adjara regions with a shortest route. The road passes through difficult geological terrain. Its rehabilitation-reconstruction will contribute to improvement of socio-economic conditions of the population of Zemo Adjara and Samtskhe-Javakheti, as well as further development of tourism, since it connects Beshumi ski resort to Batumi and Tbilisi. As a result of the project, maritime and mountain tourism of Adjara will be united.

The project will significantly improve road safety. In addition, travel time from Batumi to Akhaltsikhe will be reduced by 1.5 hours. The design section starts from borough Khulo and ends at Zarzma village of Adigeni, by passing through Goderdzi pass.

After the implementation of the project, the tourist flow will increase, which will create new opportunities for the local population.
