The construction of the Khashuri bypass road, which is part of the East-West Highway (E-60) within Zemo Osiauri-Chumateteli project, has been completed and the road has been open for traffic. The project was developed with the financial assistance of the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the financial guarantee of the European Union and amounted to GEL 133 million, while the share of the financial support of the World Bank (WB) in the project is GEL 50 million.

A 4-lane road has been put into operation at 11.5 km from the 13 km section of the Khashuri bypass road, while the remaining 1.5 km will be temporarily 2-lane. The construction of 2 additional lanes on the 1.5 km section of the road will be completed in October and all 13 km of the Khashuri bypass road will have 4 lanes.

Khashuri bypass road will start at the last section of Agara-Zemo Osiauri road and will connect to the existed road at the new interchange of Surami. A 420m bridge, distinguished with the highest piers in Georgia was constructed at this section.

Khashuri bypass road will significantly relieve the city of Khashuri from traffic jams, and transit traffic will be fully implemented on the new road. Travel time via Khashuri bypass road will be reduced by 40-50% and will be available in 10 minutes instead of 20 minutes.

Khashuri bypass road is a part of Zemo Osiauri-Chumateleti road. After completion of the Chumateleti bypass section, the road will reach Rikoti Pass tunnel. The mentioned road will allow detouring Khashuri, Surami and Chumateleti. Within the project a four- lane cement-concrete road, 21 bridges, 5 tunnels, reinforced-concrete underpasses, culverts and drainage systems will be constructed.

Zemo Osiauri-Chumateleti section is part of the country's main transit highway. An operation of this section will boost the capacity of the highway and the level of the road safety, while the travel time will be reduced.

A new road will also detour the so-called Hammock Market of Khashuri. However, in order to provide the residents of the surrounding villages to sell their products, special, safe trading areas with well-maintained infrastructure will be arranged for them along the relevant sections of the road. The new retail spaces will enable the locals to further develop their business under secure and other necessary standards.
