Reconstruction of Khulo-Zarzma section of Batumi (Angisa) – Akhaltsikhe secondary road has been retendered. The project envisages rehabilitation of 47km road and 7 bridges, pavement of two-lane asphalt-concrete road surface.

A new tender will be announced into two parts. The major share of the project will be still funded by the Kuwait Fund, while the remaining 5km will be financed from the state budget.

“Successful negotiations with financial institutions contributed to the development of tender requirements in such a way that will allow more Georgian companies to compete in a tender. Construction of Kutaisi bypass road can be named as a successful example of such approach, in which Georgian companies are employed at three lots out of total four. Involvement of Georgian companies helps them to gain experience and encourages faster development of the projects. The Roads Department is doing its best efforts to achieve the maximum progress on the Khulo-Zarma project during 2020,” said Irakli Karseladze, Chairman at Roads Department of Georgia.

Upgraded Khulo-Zarzma road will connect Samtskhe-Javakheti and Adjara regions with a shortest route. Rehabilitated section will start from borough Khulo and end at Zarzma village of Adigeni, by passing through Goderdzi pass. An upgraded road will reduce travel time from Batumi to Akhaltsikhe by 1.5 hours.

After the project is implemented, the tourist flow will increase, giving the local population new opportunities.
