European Investment Bank is allocating €5,750,000 to finance road safety

The European Investment Bank (EIB) is allocating a grant of  €5,750,000 for Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia under  The Technical Assistance for Georgia Transport Connectivity  (GTC) project.

The grant will be used to enhance the quality and safety of Georgian road network, which considers improvement of driving conditions, reduction of travel time and operational costs, improvement of safety level on national road network and institutional strengthening for preparation and implementation of the project, including road safety improvement measures.    

Specifically, €150,000 will be used for environmental and social studies required under EIB financed projects, while €600,000 will be spent on identifying and selecting of “black spots”  on the east-west highway (in the vicinity of EIB financed projects). Meanwhile, €5 million will be applied for outsource services of independent experts, who will assist  Roads Department in implementation and management of road projects funded by EIB and included in or related to Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).

Roads Department plans to implement five projects to improve safety of road infrastructure under Georgia’s National Road Safety Action Plan 2020. Projects are financed by the state budget as well as by the support of the World Bank and Asian Development Bank. 

Roads Department has already implemented road safety projects in the value of GEL 8 MIO under the National Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan 2019, while the works worth 8 million GEL are underway and will be completed in the first half of 2020.
