Roads Department implements five projects to improve road safety

According to Georgia’s National Road Safety Action Plan 2020, the main objective of Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia is to improve safety level of road infrastructure. Department plans to implement 5 projects to meet this target.

Pursuant to Action Plan, with the financial support of the World Bank metal guardrails of 71,400m length complying with EN 1317 standards will be arranged on Imereti and Racha-Lechkhumi road network, but the similar structure of 31,370m length on Mtskheta-Mtianeti and Kvemo Kartli road network. 

In order to define the safety level and existing risks, pilot  study - International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) will be implemented on about 600 km long international and secondary roads of Mtskheta-Mtianeti  by financing of the World Bank.

In order to improve road safety, sidewalls, drainage systems and road signs will be arranged as preventive measures on the road section passing through Dzegvi village.

In total 1283 km of the road and first of all “black spots” will be inspected by Roads Department in order to identify safety problems.  Road infrastructure will be improved by installation of additional road signs and by provision of road marking, metal guardrails and other technical facilities.  

Roads Department plans to procure 38 scales and arrange parking areas to control oversize and overweight vehicles moving on international and secondary roads in Guria and Imereti regions. At this stage, bidding conditions are being agreed with Asian Development Bank.

Roads Department  has already implemented works in the value of GEL 8 MIO under the National Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan 2019.  Metal guardrails of 62750 m length and 5100 m long steel ropes, complying with EN 1317 standard,  were installed in Samtskhe-Javakheti and Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti regions; curve elements were repaired, culverts and  drainages were arranged at 4 sections of Vaziani-Gombori-Telavi road.

Works in the value of GEL 8.5 MIO have been already commenced on 4 sections of Kakheti road and will be completed in the first half of 2020. Works consider arrangement of roundabouts, safety islands, road signs and road markings at merging and branching locations; also provision of sidewalks, roundabouts, safety islands, road signs and road markings at 6 road sections of Imereti and Shida Kartli regions.
