Construction of the Rikoti Pass road, an unprecedented infrastructure project in the region, is intensively ongoing. The project is one of the most complicated in Europe in terms of engineering, and a similar project has not yet been implemented in the Caucasus.

At present, active construction works are being carried out on the 12.2 km of Khevi-Ubisa and the 13km Ubisa-Shorapani sections of Rikoti Pass road. Tunnels and bridges are actively being constructed on these sections. The contract has already been signed on the Chumateleti-Khevi section, where cleanup activities are underway.

Contract for construction of the last section of Rikoti Pass road, Shorapani-Argveta section will be awarded in the short run.  The project envisages construction of 4-lane 14.7km concrete pavement highway. 14 bridges (total length - 5.0km) and 12 tunnels (total length – 8.5km) will be constructed at the mentioned section.

In total, construction of up to 51.6 km road is planned on Rikoti Pass, which includes 96 bridges and 53 tunnels. Completion of Rikoti Pass project is planned for 2022.

Modernization of Rikoti pass section is very important for the development of road network and its compliance to modern standards. A new road envisages all modern safety requirements and its parameters will double the speed and finally, completion of East-West corridor will reduce the travel time twice.

If today travel time from Red Bridge to Sarpi is 8 hours, it will take 4-4.5 hours in the future. The development of the East-West Corridor is crucial both for the country's domestic development and for improving Georgia's position in the region as an attractive transport corridor. In addition, with the growing tourist flow, the importance of safe and comfortable road infrastructure is particularly important.
