Irakli Karseladze - Khashuri bypass road and Kutaisi bypass road will be completed in 2020

Event to celebrate Road Engineers Day is being hold at Radisson Blu Iveria Hotel today.  First Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure, Chairman of Roads Department of Georgia, Irakli Karseladze made a presentation of works implemented in 2019 and introduced plans of 2020.

Modernization of main roads into the highways are being actively progressing during the current year. For now 208 km of road has been constructed under the highway projects, works are ongoing on 142 km of road and in addition, construction works will start on 50 km of road.  It should be noted that 80% of people employed at international projects would be Georgian citizens.

According to Irakli Karseladze, works have been actively progressing at Khevi-Ubisa and Ubisa-Shorapani sections of Rikoti pass during the current year, contract has been awarded for the first –Chumateleti-Khevi section, wherein preparatory and mobilization works are ongoing, while tender procedures are at the final stage for the fourth Shorapani-Argveta section. At the same time, Contract was signed for construction of Kvesheti-Kobi road and 9 km long tunnel. 

“Completion of 13 km long Khashuri bypass road and 41 km long two-lane Kutaisi bypass –Samtredia road is planned in 2020, which will unload those two cities from transit traffic” – stated Irakli Karseladze.  

10 000 people are employed at ongoing projects of Roads Department and this number will increase together with development of highway projects, which is important in terms of local employment and improvement of professional skills.
