Roads Department Launches Internship Program for Construction Faculty Students

Construction faculty students of higher education institutions are offered internship programs by the Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia. An internship program is an opportunity for young specialists, to development their professional skills. The students of both, Bachelors and Masters Programs are allowed to participate in the program.   

In order to select interns, the Roads Department has already cooperated with Georgia Technical University, University of San Diego and Kutaisi Akaki Tsereteli State University.

Currently, 12 interns are selected for the on-the-job-training (OJT) at the following divisions of the Department: design, highway projects management, west Georgian state budget projects management, rehabilitation and road safety.

“Upgrading qualification in both, state and private sector of construction business is of significant importance for us. From summer, we started introductory collaboration with higher education institutions. Today we are launching a new phase – internship program that will allow students to get experience from qualified staff of the Department and involve in the working process. After completion of internship program, high achievers will be offered jobs in the Department,” said Maya Tskitishvili, Minister of the Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia.

According to Tskitishvili, in future it is planned to involve all the structures of the Ministry in this initiative and launch such pilot project at other subordinated divisions.   

During the program, together with practical courses, interns will undergo theoretical courses. In particular, field specialists of the Department will share their knowledge on issues such: the modern standards in the field of activities and functions of roads, road safety, road construction, and management of the modernization and reconstruction projects, bank protection measures, construction management and monitoring of state budget funded ongoing rehabilitation projects.

On an initial stage, internship program will last for three months. The following stages will be planned based on the evaluation of programs leaders and interns’ desire.

Beside design-construction direction, the Department plans to select interns for the following directions: procurement, financial management, environment protection and social issues, legal and HR.
