Construction of Zemo Osiauri-Chumateleti road is underway within the framework of the E60 East-West Highway Improvement Project. The project consists of two sections. Work on the first section continues in intensive mode, while on the second section, various issues are being discussed and negotiated with the World Bank in order to resume the halted work process.

Despite the challenges, significant progress has been made on Zemo Osiauri-Chumateleti section. Construction of the 5.8km section will be completed by the end of the year, and by July 2020 Khashuri will have a 13km four-lane cement-concrete highway. The new road will start at the last section of Agara-Zemo Osiauri and will connect to the existing road at the new interchange in Surami.

Pavement works of cement-concrete and construction of bridge crossings are underway at the first section of Zemo Osiauri-Chumateleti road.

Zemo Osiauri-Chumateleti road goes to the Rikoti Pass tunnel. The mentioned road will allow to bypass Khashuri, Surami, Chumateleti from the north and go out at the Rikoti tunnel. It is one of the most difficult sections from engineering point of view. Within the project a four- lane cement concrete road, 21 bridges, 5 tunnels, reinforced concrete underpasses, culverts and drainage systems will be constructed.
