Reconstruction of Baghdati-Abastumani road came to the turning point

Roads Department of Georgia implements rehabilitation-reconstruction of Baghdati-Abastumani road under the mountain roads development program.  Total length of the road is 61,5 km, estimated value is up to 324 MIO GEL. Project commenced in 2018 and it will be completed gradually by 2022.

By this time, in total, works are progressing on 42.2 km long section.  Tender for km17-km33 section of Kutaisi-Baghdati-Abastumani-Benara road - tunnel access road (Lot I) and for km17-km33 section of the same road – Tunnel bypass (Lot 2) will be announced today; also tender for construction of Zekari pass tunnel will be announced in few dayს. 

The mentioned road will significantly improve service and safety level; will reduce travel distance and time from the central part of Georgia to the border of Turkey. Road reconstruction will promote to revitalize the region and economic activity. Transit traffic will be restricted on the mentioned road.

Average travel time from Kutaisi airport to Abastumani  is 4 hours; Works completion will result in reducing this time by 1,5 hours, thus is crucial in terms of social-economic  and tourism potential development.  In parallel with reconstruction of Baghdati-Abastumani road, Abastumani Development General Plan was developed, wherein experience of successful resorts of the world are considered, based on which the need of the bypass road is determined.

 

Abastumani 16km bypass road has successfully passed the scoping stage. By this time, design works are in the final stage of completion while the environmental impact assessment document is being developed.  Bidding for new bypass road will be announced as soon as the design works are completed.

The purpose of the project is to connect the tourism important regions, attract the tourists and to make the road’s operation not for 7 month but the whole year. This will be the prerequisite for Abastumi to become the notable Balneological-climatic and exclusive ecological resort as successful project the world.

The project will ensure employment of the local people from the beginning of construction activities as well as from the resort functioning period.

6 alternative alignments were developed while designing Abastumani new bypass road. According to the comparative analysis, three options were selected, wherefrom priority was given to the route, which fully meets technical- economical, environmental and social requirements. In case of minimal environmental impact, the compensation measures are considered for abovementioned alignments, including the transfer of additional territory to protected areas.

Upgraded Bagdati-Abastumani route will enable the regions of Imereti, Samtskhe-Javakheti and Adjara to be connected by the shortest road. The benefit from the new road is important not only for these regions but also for the whole country. Traffic will be relieved in Abastumani borough and the country will have a unique, environmentally friendly and attractive resort.
