Irakli Karseladze, First Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, Chairman of Roads Department highlighted several major projects during 6-Month Activity Report Presentation of Roads Department. According to him, Kvesheti-Kobi road construction project along with Rikoti bypass road project is essential for development of the country and main roads.

“Kvesheti-Kobi road project is critically important, which is divided in 2 Lots and contracts will be concluded within August-September. As for Natakhtari section, design works are progressing.

ADB allocated financial resources in the amount of USD 415 MIO for Kvesheti-Kobi project several days ago, wherefore I would like to express my gratitude to them and to all our partner organizations.

Construction of Kvesheti-Kobi road is divided into two sections. The project envisages construction of 22.7 km 2-lane asphalt-concrete road, 6 bridges and 5 tunnels, including arch bridge and one 9 km long tunnel.    Width of 9km long tunnel will be 15 meters, which is quite rare not only in Transcaucasia, but also worldwide. In this regard, Kvesheti-Kobi tunnel will enter the list of tunnels with largest diameters and definitely, it will be the first large-scale tunnel in Transcaucasia” – stated Irakli Karseladze.

Kvesheti-Kobi section is a part of North-South transit corridor. The road passes through difficult terrain and is characterized with heavy snowfalls in winter period.     New road and 9km long tunnel will solve existing problems and consequently will ensure free transit traffic at any time of the year.    The tunnel will ensure safe and more reliable conditions for road users during the winter. Besides, new road will prevent Kazbegi national park and Gudauri winter resort from traffic flows.

International shipping companies (from Turkey, Armenia, Ukraine and other), local population and tourists actively use the mentioned road. It is the shortest route of North-South corridor to connect Central Asia with Europe and East Asia.

New road will pass through Kvesheti, Kobi and beautiful Caucasus mountains from northeast side and ensure safe and fast movement.
