GTU Students Familiarized with Zemo Osiauri-Chumateleti Construction Process

Deputy Chairman of Roads Department of Georgia, Giorgi Tsibadze, together with the representatives of the Department and students of Civil Engineering faculty of Georgian Technical University made a site visit at East-West highway road, Zemo Osiauri-Chumateleti section. The students were able to be familiarized with the construction of bridges, underground passages and the arrangement of earthworks. The project engineer delivered a detailed presentation on the ongoing and planned technical works on Zemo Osiauri-Chumateleti road and responded the project related questions delivered by the students.

Zemo Osiauri-Chumateleti project is divided into two sections. Currently, construction of bridges, arrangement of embankment, landslide prevention measures and electricity transmission lines are ongoing in the first section.

Zemo Osiauri-Chumateleti road goes to the Rikoti Pass tunnel. In this way, it would be possible to bypass Khashuri, Surami, Chumateleti from the north and come to the Rikoti tunnel. The mentioned section is one of the most complicated and includes construction of several tunnels and bridges.

Under the Project: a four-lane cement concrete road, 21 bridges, 5 tunnels, reinforced concrete underpasses, culverts and drainage systems will be constructed.

Zemo Osiauri-Chumateleti section is being carried out with the financial support of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and European Investment Bank (EIB).

In addition, the Roads Department plans to start the internship program in technical direction, enabling the students to use an acquired knowledge in practice and to develop empirical skills.

Student's visits on the construction sites will be continued and interested students will be up to the task to participate in the road construction process and take internships.
