Bidding is open for international tender of Kvesheti-Kobi 9km tunnel construction. In total, seven companies have submitted bids. Submitted bids will be estimated as considered by tender documentation and a qualified lowest bidder will be revealed as the winner.

9km Kvesheti-Kobi tunnel will be 15 meter wide, that is rather rare not only in Transcaucasia but throughout the world and will be listed among tunnels by longest diameter.

Kvesheti-Kobi international road is a part of North-South corridor, which has a transit importance. The project envisages construction of 2-lane 22.7 km road, 6 bridges and 5 tunnels, including construction of one 9km tunnel. The tunnel starts at Tskere village and ends at Kobi village, mentioned tunnel will pass under Jvari pass. Construction of Kvesheti-Kobi road is divided into 2 lots.

The road passes through difficult geographical route and characterized with heavy snowfalls in the winter period. Due to avalanche hazard and adverse weather, traffic is often closed in winter and transit traffic is interrupted.

Construction of a new road and 9-km tunnel will address pending issues. Unhindered transit traffic will be possible at any time of the year.

After project realization, distance between Kvesheti and Kobi will be reduced by 12 km instead of existing 35 km road.

Asian Development Bank (ADB) and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) finance the construction works of Kvesheti-Kobi section for Reconstruction and Development.

The first bid announced for Kvesheti-Kobi tunnel construction has been cancelled and the mentioned tender has been re-announced.

As for Kvesheti-Kobi second lot, agreement for 12.7km road construction will be signed soon.
