State Budget Allocates Record High GEL 15.5 MM for Road Safety

Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia provides information about implemented, ongoing and planned road safety activities.

Development of international and secondary road network is the main goal of Roads Department and ensuring international road safety standards is just as important activity of the Department.

Overall, over 7,000 km length of road is under the management of Roads Department. Out of that, more than 1,500 km represents international highway.

New directions and combined responsibilities are planned within the long-term approach of road safety, which will contribute to achievement of better results of the strategy Safe Corridor, Safe City, Safe Village.  

This year, a record high, GEL 9 million will be allocated from state budget for road safety activities and GEL 6 540 000 from world bank (WB).

Guardrails, barriers, refuge islands, speed bumps and surveillance cameras will be arranged and renovated within the frame of road safety improvement activities.

The above listed road safety improvement activities will be conducted together with MIA in Samtskhe-Javakheti and Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti regions, covering 70km road.  

Over 3 million GEL will be allocated from state budget for implementation of road safety measures in Vaziani-Gombori-Telavi.

Roundabouts, refuge islands, traffic signs and road markings, worth over GEL 2 million will be arranged at following road sections: Tianeti-Akhmeta-Kvareli-Ninigori and Kvareli-Kvareli Lake, Akhmeta-Telavi-Bakurtsikhe and Kvareli-Mukuzani, Tianeti-Akhmeta-Kvareli-Ninigori and Kvareli-Mukuzani, Tianeti-Akhmeta-Kvareli-Ninigori and Telavi-Shakriani.

Last year, more than GEL 4 million was spent at small-scale road safety activities at 21 sections of Imereti, Guria, Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti and Kvemo Kartli regions.

In addition, inspections were hold for improvement of existed safety conditions, lightening works were commenced and are ongoing at 115 various sections of Georgian regions. 

Just for this purpose of road safety, in the end of 2018 construction of the second lane of Kutaisi bypass road was commenced. The project, worth GEL 200 million is funded from the state budget.  The construction of the second lane is due to the large number of traffic accidents caused by violation of the speed limit and traffic rules. After completion of the construction of the new Kutaisi bypass road, the bilateral movement will still be possible on this road.
