Up to 20 international and local companies were interested in the project of Kvesheti-Kobi tunnel. A pre-bid meeting was held in Roads Department. Representatives of companies received detailed information from specialists of the Department as well as Spanish company IDOM, which is an author of the Kvesheti-Kobi tunnel project.

Roads Department plans to construct 23 km road on Kvesheti-Kobi section of Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Larsi international road, including construction of 9 km tunnel.

The tunnel which will pass under the Jvari pass, starts at the village of Tskere and ends at the village of Kobi.

Due to avalanche hazard and difficult meteorological conditions in winter, traffic is often closed, while after completion of the project this problem will be fully resolved and travel will be safe, transit vehicles will avoid passing through the territories of Gudauri resort.

Construction works will be started by the end of this year and will be completed in 2022. The project will reduce travel time in Tbilisi-Larsi direction by about 1 hour.
