Roads Department announced the bidding on construction of 9 km tunnel on Kvesheti-Kobi section of Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Larsi international road. The tunnel starts at the village of Tskere and ends at the village of Kobi, and it will pass under Jvari Pass.

Construction of 22.7 km and 2 lane asphalt concrete road, 6 bridges and 5 tunnels was planned on Kvesheti-Kobi road, including construction of one 9 km tunnel. Construction of Kvesheti-Kobi road is divided into 2 lots. Bidding on the first Lot, which includes 10 km road and 9 km tunnel, was announced on July 11 and the deadline for submission of bids is August 29. Regarding the second section, bidding was announced on June 1 this year and the deadline for submission of bids is July 18.

Kvesheti-Kobi section is part of North-South Transport Corridor. The road passes through a difficult geographical route and is characterized by heavy snowfalls during winter period. New road and 9 km tunnel will solve existing problems. Uninterrupted transit traffic will be possible at any time of year.

It should be noted that due to avalanche hazard and difficult meteorological conditions in winter, traffic is often closed and transit traffic is delayed on Jvari Pass. After completion of the project, this problem will be fully resolved and safe and comfortable travel will be ensured. Construction works are expected to begin by the end of 2018 and will be completed in 2022.

After completion of the project, travel time in the direction of Tbilisi-Larsi will be reduced by 1 hour.

Construction works are financed by the Asian Development Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
