The Asian Development Bank plans to increase investments in Georgia. Construction works, which will be financed by the donor, envisage construction of 24 km road. Under the project, a tunnel with a length of 9 km will be constructed. Kvesheti-Kobi section is a part of Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Larsi international road. Design works are funded by the World Bank and are in the phase of completion.

Today, Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure, First Deputy Minister, Chairman of Roads Department Irakli Karseladze and General Director of Central and West Asia Department of ADB Werner Liepach inspected project construction area.

“We have been working in Georgia for 10 years and invested more than $ 2 billion in this period. This time, we find a very interesting project, which is part of the road connecting North and South. Due to mountainous terrain, complex works are to be implemented, including construction of the bridge and the tunnel. I am sure that it will be one the most important projects for Georgia as well as the Asian Development Bank” – Werner Liepach said.

“Today, we inspected the exact location, where road construction will take place. Besides the road, construction of the tunnel and the bridge has been planned. Based on our designers’ appraisal, this bridge will be among the Europe’s 10 best and highest bridges. Based on donors’ appraisal, it is a special project in the region. Only for the current year, the Asian Development Bank finances road, water supply and other types of projects with a worth of about GEL 360 million in Georgia. It is an important partner and I hope that our further cooperation will continue” – Maia Tskitishvili said.

According to Maia Tskitishvili, implementation of Kvesheti-Kobi project is necessary for development of transit and tourism potential of the country.

In winter, due to avalanche hazard and difficult meteorological conditions at Jvari pass, traffic is often closed and transit traffic is interrupted. After completion of the project, this problem will be solved and travel becomes safe.

The 9 km tunnel, which will pass under the Jvari Pass, starts in the village of Tskere and ends in the village of Kobi. The project will reduce travel time in the direction of Tbilisi-Larsi by 1 hour.
