Roads Department of Georgia carries out the construction of a 15.5 km bypass section of Akhmeta-Telavi-Bakurtsikhe road (Bakurtsikhe-Gurjaani).

After putting this road into operation, travel time and expenses will be significantly reduced. Traffic will be safe and comfortable for local population.

Gurjaani-Bakurtsikhe 15.5 km bypass road will connect Tbilisi-Bakurtsikhe-Lagodekhi (border of the Republic of Azerbaijan) international road and Akhmeta-Telavi-Bakurtsikhe secondary road with each other. If not necessary, vehicles will avoid passing through the town of Gurjaani and the villages of Bakurtsikhe, Dzirkoki, Chandari, Vejini and Chumlaki in Gurjaani municipality.

At present, arrangement works of soil foundation, embankment and concrete pipe-bridges are underway. Construction works of the bridge on a km4-km9 section, as well as, arrangement of the lower layer of road foundation and fabrication of beams are ongoing. Arrangement works of asphalt concrete are underway.

The project will improve safety and quality of Akhmeta-Telavi-Bakurtsikhe local road connecting to Tbilisi. Improvement of roads is a very important process for Kakheti region, since this region has quite developed agriculture and great tourist potential.

The project, under the Third Secondary and Local Roads Project (SLRPIII), is being financed by the World Bank and its cost is GEL 38 000 000. Works started this year and will be completed in 2018. At this stage, a total of 270 people are employed.

Construction of Bakurtsikhe-Gurjaani bypass road is a part of spatial development of the country – one of the directions of 4-point plan, an initiative of Prime Minister George Kvirikashvili.
