Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia completes the rehabilitation of a 10.5 km section of Orpiri-Tsutskhvati-Mgvime road.

Roads Department actively continues rehabilitation of roads throughout Georgia. Rehabilitation of 34 km road is planned in the Imereti region in 2017, from which rehabilitation of 30 km road is already completed.

Orpiti-Tsatskhvati-Mgvime section is located in Imereti region, in the territory of Tkibuli municipality and passes through the villages: Orpiri, Koka, Okhomira and Tsutskhvati. A road to be rehabilitated starts from a turn located at km 9 of Kutaisi (Motsameta)-Tkibuli-Ambrolauri secondary road and ends at the village of Tsutskhvati. This section was not rehabilitated for more than 30 years and the road was almost fully amortized.

For this time, the arrangement works of cement concrete pavement, shoulders, ditches, road signs, enclosed bus stops, steel cables, parapets, junctions and entrances to private yards, also, bridge rehabilitation works are ongoing on this section.

The mentioned section goes to the historic Tsutskhvati fortress and the beginning of a mountain trail going to the karst cave, which is very important in terms of tourism.

The project envisages: rehabilitation of road pavement, artificial structures and a bridge existing on this section. Gabion support walls, road furniture and facilities will be arranged. In order to ensure safe movement of vehicles and perfect orientation of drivers, arrangement of road signs, barriers, directional posts and marking of the road carriageway has been considered on this road.

In order to avoid damage to the existing caves, a length of design road to be arranged on the last section of rehabilitation road is reduced by 274m. Instead of this, a well-equipped hiking trail and warehouse of vehicles have been arranged. The trail was surfaced with granite beams (so-called “brushatka”).

The project is financed by the state budget and its cost is GEL 7 971 600. Works started in August 2016 and will be completed by the end of this year. A total of 180 people are employed within the project.
