Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia starts the construction of a 14 km section of Batumi bypass road.

The project is jointly financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). Within the project, 2-lane asphalt concrete road, 19 bridge crossings, 4 interchanges, 5 tunnels and 57 culverts will be constructed. The new bypass road will pass through: Makhinjauri, Kapreshumi, Salibauri, Peria, Makhvilauri and Khelvachauri.

Currently, the existing road passes through the tourist and residential zone, which creates problems for international transit of vehicles. Batumi bypass road (together with Kobuleti bypass road) will fully relieve the traffic in the resort area of Adjara, which will promote an increase of transit turnout.

Deputy Chairmen of Roads Department and the representatives of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) inspected the existing situation on Batumi bypass road on-site.

This section is a part of spatial development of the country – one of the directions in 4-point plan, an initiative of Prime Minister George Kvirikashvili.

Period of construction works is 2017-2020.
