Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia will start construction of a tunnel at the crossing-place between Dariali and Devdoraki gorges in the near future.

In 2017, commencement of construction works of a tunnel with a length of approximately 2 km on a km132-km135 section of Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Larsi international road, at the crossing-place between Dariali and Devdoraki gorges, has been planned. The cost of the project is GEL 47 179 224 and it is being financed by the state budget, period for performance of works is considered 12 months after signing the Contract.

At present, design works of the tunnel are actively underway. An organization, the winner of the bidding, the Peri Ltd. will implement the works in design and construction mode. Within the interim report of preparation of detailed design, the company submitted some options of the project. Company specialists, geologists and Chairman of Roads Department George Seturidze inspected these options on-site.

In recent years, natural disaster has been repeated several times, which endangered movement of passengers on this section, and also, in this period of time, transit function on Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Larsi road was interrupted, which caused on average GEL 1 million daily loss for the country.

Accordingly, construction of Devdoraki tunnel is necessary for keeping Georgia’s transit function and the country will be able to have stable and safe road.
