Within the E60 East-West Highway Improvement Project, Roads Department has completed  accepting the bid proposals for construction of the 14 km section of Zemo Osiauri-Chumateleti road (east portal of Rikoti Pass). Construction works shall be started in the spring.

13 companies, selected out of 40 at the prequalification stage, have submitted their bid proposals.

Construction of Zemo Osiauri-Chumateleti section will be carried out with the financial support of the World Bank, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the European Investment Bank (EIB). Mentioned section is a part of spatial development of the country – important direction of 4-point plan initiated by Prime Minister George Kvirikashvili.  

The project envisages: construction of four-lane cement concrete road, 21 bridges, 5 tunnels, reinforced concrete underpasses, culverts and drainage systems.

A 14 km section of Zemo Osiauri-Chumateleti road goes to the Rikoti Pass tunnel. The road bypasses Khashuri, Surami and Chumateleti from the North and continues from the Rikoti tunnel.

Zemo Osiauri-Chumateleti section is a part of the main highway of the country and after putting this section into operation, highway capacity and traffic safety level of vehicles will be increased and travel time will be reduced.
