The Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia starts construction of the 14 km section of the Batumi Bypass Road. Bidding for construction works has been announced and the deadline for final submission of proposals is December 19, 2016.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) will jointly finance the project. Under the project: two-lane asphalt concrete road, 19 bridge crossings, 4 transportation interchanges, 5 tunnels and 57 culverts will be constructed. The new bypass road will pass through: Makhinjauri, Gantiadi, Kapreshumi, Salibauri, Peria, Makhvilauri and Khelvachauri.

Currently existing road passes through the tourist and residential zones, which causes problems for the movement of international transit transport. Batumi Bypass Road will completely unload traffic in the resort areas of Adjara, which will promote an increase of transit turnover.

Construction of the mentioned road section is a part of spatial development of the country, which is considered in four-point Governmental reform plan initiated by Prime Minister George Kvirikashvili.
