New bridge shall be constructed over the river Mtkvari in Mtskheta city on the request of Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia.

Current bridge, located over the river Mtkvari, at km6 of Narekvavi-Mtskheta railway station, was built in 1926. Mentioned bridge from Tbilisi side is the only connection mean for monks, nuns and prayers to reach Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, Samtavro Nunnery and Samtavro Church in Mtskheta. Moreover, the bridge also connects Mtskheta railway station with Zahesi-Mtskheta-Kavtsikhevi-Gori-Kareli-Osiauri road.

Structure is located in the old historical district (so called near the Pompey's Bridge), where Mtkvari connects with Zahesi water reservoir. Technical conditions of the old bridge could not meet modern loads and requirements of the city bridge.

Maia Kaliashvili, Deputy Chairman of Roads Department and representatives of design consulting company “BT” signed the contract related to preparation of design for construction of the bridge over the river Mtkvari and design supervision.

Considering importance of the bridge and increased traffic intensity, new bridge shall be constructed which would fully meet architectural, esthetical and historical requirements needed for museums and ensure free traffic flow. Construction of the bridge is financed from the state budget and its cost is GEL 363 440.
