Presentation of the Action Plan of Road Safety in Georgia was held

Today, presentation of the National Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan was held with the organizing of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia. The event was opened by the Minister Nodar Javakhishvili.  The importance of the newly designed document was assessed by the Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Georgia Lia Gigauri, Deputy Mayor of Tbilisi Irakli Lekvinadze, acting chairman of the Roads Department  Nugzar Gasviani, Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure Tengiz Shergelashvili, Minister of Economy Dmitri Kumsishvili and other officials. The conference was closed by a speech of the World Bank transport specialist Mustafa Benmaamar: "The World Bank supports the Government of Georgia in the process of development of the Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan. The death rate on the roads in Georgia is one of the highest in the region of Europe and Central Asia, and twice high in comparison with EU countries.  This can be avoided. However, it requires special efforts by the government and all stakeholders. We hope that   implementation of our joint plan will avoid the danger from the Georgian people. "- He said.
The working process on the Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan for 2015-2020,  was started in March 2015, within the frameworks of the 4th East-West Highway Project (EWHIP4).  The document was  developed by Road Safety Working Group (RSWG), consisting of representatives from the various government agencies (the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, Roads  Department, Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Education and Science, Ministry of Health, Labour and Social Protection and City Hall), non-governmental organizations and representatives of the World Bank. They were helped by the International Road Safety Specialist Gene Bryces.
Long-term strategy defines road safety as a permanent national priority. The new directions and joint responsibilities for road safety are set within the frameworks of the document to achieve better results. Georgia's long-term national strategy aimed to set and implementation   a modern and efficient model for improving road safety in Georgia step by step.
