Additional $ 75 mln will be spent on construction-rehabilitation works of internal and local roads. Representatives of the Government of Georgia and the World Bank have signed the Financing Agreement today. Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia Mr. Elguja Khokrishvili attended the signing ceremony.

World Bank will disburse the above-mentioned amount of money as a long-term loan to Georgia.

According to the Minister of Finance of Georgia Mr. Nodar Khaduri: “World Bank continues supporting Georgia through implementing various programs. Today, we have signed the agreement which considers financial sources for internal and local roads of the third project.”

“The key beneficiaries of the project will be the residents of towns and villages and representatives of business sector. Implementation of the project will make access to markets and other necessary services for residents easier,” – said Henry Keral, World Bank Regional Director for the South Caucasus.

The objective of the project of internal and local roads is reducing costs related to road use and improvement of management sustainability of internal and local road network. Within the frames of the project 200 km length of road will be rehabilitated which will facilitate connection to three cities (Telavi, Samtredia and Tsalenjikha), 126 villages and around 45 600 families which is around 138, 000 people.

Most of these villages are located in the regions where movement is difficult due to poor condition of roads and high level of poverty is recorded. It is also suggested that the project will meet the needs of road users who have low income and will support development on local level in target regions through better access to economic opportunities.

“We have agreed the list of the roads which require construction-rehabilitation with local authorities. Needs of local population have been considered. The project covers construction of a new section of Bakurtsikhe-Gurjaani bypass road of around 15km. The project also covers implementation of road safety activities as well as a research which implies involvement of village population in maintenance of local roads, which will create jobs,” – Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia Mr. Elguja Khokrishvili said.
