Group of geologists of the Ministry of Environment Protection and Natural Resources of Georgia have studied the vicinity of rock-avalanche type of landslide on km 146th of the Rikoti Pass. According to their assessment, this area is in a landslide zone, where there is a chance of recurrence of a landslide due to complex geological conditions. According to the geologists’ conclusion, it is necessary to use technical measures; in particular, building of a retaining wall which will protect this section of Tbilisi-Senaki-Leselidze carriageway from landslides.

Geologists found it inappropriate to drive heavy machinery and create artificial steps on top of a slope with big inclination, because of high risks. Hence, the Roads Department is carrying out works at the bottom of the slope. Temporary retaining wall has been built and, therefore, the road narrowed in, that made it necessary to carry out widening works of the carriageway. On this stage, asphalt pavement works areunderway.

The Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia has already addressed a design company. The design company will consider the recommendations prepared by a team of geologists of the Ministry of Environment Protection and Natural Resources and will prepare a detail design, according to which the protective measures will be implemented.

As a reminder, the landslide collapsed on the Rikoti Pass for the second time on June 17th, causing blockage of the part of a carriageway and interruption of traffic.
